November 2018 – President’s Message

Greetings fellow NJAIHA members! We have a busy fall and winter to report on this month. Daniel Preisler, our Outreach Coordinator, deserves a big thank you for coordinating, attending and representing NJAIHA at the 2018 NJ School Counselor Association Fall Conference last month. There was a high level of interest from the high school, middle school and even elementary school guidance counselors for NJAIHA to attend career fairs at schools throughout the state. We gave away all of the NJAIHA bling, plus some leftover Halloween candy and a stack of pamphlets, and expect to get many calls from guidance counselors in the next year. Some of the attendees though we had something to do with the cleaning of teeth, so we had to explain that “hygiene” is an antiquated term, and educate them on our history and true mission of protecting New Jersey worker health! There is a photo on page 13 of the newsletter. As the invitations to attend career days come in, we will communicate opportunities for members to attend local high schools near their home or work. This is a great opportunity to give back to your local community and industry!

Thanks to Craig Doolittle and the executive committee for a great job recruiting excellent presenters and educational topics for the PDCs. The Professional Development Courses will be December 5, 2018 at the PSEG facilities at 4000 Hadley Road in South Plainfield, NJ. Speakers and topics include Course #1: Flash Fire and Explosion Hazards: Identification and Control presented by Vahid Ebadat, PhD Stonehouse Process Safety, Course #2: Are you prepared to be an Expert Witness? presented by Marc Gaffrey, Partner at Hoagland, Longo, Moran, Dunst & Doukas, LLP, Course #3: “Ethical Fitness- A Method for Resolving Complex Dilemmas” presented by Nancy Orr, CIH, CSP, FAIHA, and Course #4: Current Issues in Causation Analysis at the Interface of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational and Environmental Medicine presented by Dr. Robert Laumbach, MD, MPH, CIH Rutgers School of Public Health. Please remember to register well in advance to secure your seat at the conference.

In addition to the PDCs, please note that the Northeast Regional Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition: “Updates and Current Topics in Occupational Safety and Health” is scheduled for Friday, December 7, 2018 at the Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village located at 201 Village Boulevard, Princeton, NJ.

In closing, as we look to continue and expand the number of attendees at our events and interest in the IH field
and certification we look for any input from our membership in these areas.

Sincerely,
Doug Glorie, PE, CIH
President NJAIHA
